Take 5 Minutes to Shape Your Ideal Retirement
Before jumping into your retirement plans, it’s important to understand, what do you want from retirement? This quick exercise will help.
|
Picture yourself in 5-10 years time. You’re living your ideal retirement, everything has gone to plan and you’ve achieved what success means to you. Ask yourself 3 questions:
Why am I excited to get out of bed in the morning?
What fills my day?
What new things am I still accomplishing/ working on?
You can jot them down on paper, or use the attached worksheet PDF.
The takeaways:
These might seem like obvious/ simple questions, but they’ll help reveal what truly drives you, or where you might lack clarity.
Maybe you’ll realize there are more hours in a day than you thought, or that you actually need a larger passion project to keep your mind busy, or that you’re the most excited simple to just wake up when you feel like, without the alarm clock.
Whatever it is, use this as a guide to shape the next phase of your life.
Taking it a step further:
If you want a deeper reflection, imagine the opposite of your ideal retirement: 5–10 years from now, where you didn’t invest time or energy into yourself and your bad habits have taken over. What does it look like?
Answer the same 3 questions from this perspective.
This is a really uncomfortable process and is definitely not fun, but it can really help you to:
Identify some bad habits or areas of your life to work on.
Visualize the version of you that you want to avoid, motivating you in the right direction.
